Got to check out a new bar/restaurant in Madison last night with Jess & Pete. Otto’s Restaurant & Bar reminds me of one of those old small town bars I’d go to with my folks for supper when we were visiting family. Just has that warm, old school, small town feel, without all the dingy, grimy, smoky nastiness. Service was excellent. In a nod to my parents and knowing they’d have loved this place, I ordered an Old Fashioned. “Brandy Old Fashioned Sweet” to be precise, just like Irv. Yes, they muddle. I checked to make sure they did before I ordered. I had two. Delicious!
The three of us shared two appetizers, both very yummy. The Otto’s Sampler had Grilled Shrimp wrapped in prosciutto (which I skipped), Broiled Mushroom Caps, and Bruschetta. The bruschetta was good but a bit heavy on the kalamata olive spread. The Moroccan Crab Cakes were a fun take on the standard crab cakes: snow crab, almonds, hazelnuts, curry, tomato-ginger jam & caper aioli.
Definitely will be back. We stayed in the bar area but they have a full dining section would like to try out a full meal there at some point.
