Daily Positives – 6/2/2010

  • Endocrinology consult went well this morning. I have a ways to go, but am hopeful again.
  • Stopped in to visit Jen after work – still doing well and was her usual chipper self. Got to meet her sister Jean.
  • Attempted another short run this evening – 4 miles. Used the treadmill due to rain. No bonk, but the achilles flared up so I alternated walking/running miles.
  • Norm, Alex, and Erik stopped over to pick up the fish. I had been taking care of the fish during the India experience. We did lose one goldfish but everyone else did great.
  • Got some much needed bike maintenance done. Replaced the bottom bracket and got the crankset installed securely this time.

The Bonk Chronicles: Endocrinology Consult

Met with Dr. Wubben this morning and was impressed. She clearly did her research on me prior to  the appointment, was very thorough, asked lots of questions, had a couple of theories, and had a game plan for moving forward. We walked through the notes and logs I’ve been keeping. She was also informed me that with the home glucose meters, the lower the value, the less reliable they are.

Obviously still way too early for a diagnosis, so more testing is on the docket for early next week. She agreed we need to do blood work while I’m symptomatic and figure out where my insulin levels (and a few other things) are at when the glucose is low. There are also  few other things she wants to check for. Her and Ayla (Dr Wubben’s RN assistant) are working out the logistics and will be getting back to me. In the meantime, she recommended lowering my intake of carbohydrates as they seem to have an adverse affect on my insulin/glucose regulation process.

One of her theories has to do with antibodies attaching to the insulin as its produced, inhibiting its effectiveness on glucose regulation. This is apparently treatable with prednisone. This is a pretty rare condition that primarily affects Asian, and occasionally, African American populations. Unless somebody has some genealogical or genetic information on me that I’m not privy to, call me skeptical for now. She is also not ruling out insulinoma.  This makes some sense but after some additional thought, I’d have guessed this would have been spotted on the MRI. She was reasonably confident that we can rule out adrenal gland malfunction.

Daily Positives – 5/31/2010

  • Rode with Jess early. Great weather and conversation.
  • Later in the morning we hooked up and did the Bratfest Ride with SBR/RBS crew and Norm. Got in 50 miles total with no achilles pain. Worked through some mechanical problems.
  • Appreciated the great customer service from Dorn True Value Hardware store in Oregon. Dude came out and let me “check the wrench for size” before purchasing it, enabling me to tighten the crankset enough to get back to Madison. No purchase required. Very cool.
  • Fun hanging out with folks at Bratfest after the ride. Ran into Jeff H and got to catch up for a bit.
  • Short visit with Kathleen before she left for Baja. Let her know I appreciated the guidance/suggestion she’d offered last week regarding water and its success by utilizing the path of least resistance.
  • Sitka and I got to hang out with Jen and watch Avatar on BluRay. Not quite 3D, but still awesome none the less.

Daily Positives – 5/30/2010

  • Got to spend some additional quality time with Dean & Deb this morning before heading back to Madison. Checked out their iPads (both have one). Amazing device. Just a question of when, not if.
  • Really enjoyed the drive back alone this AM – awesome weather, windows open, stereo cranked. Cried a little, laughed a little, and sang a lot. Felt great to be alive and know I’m going to be ok.
  • Did a short, easy run. First in almost 4 weeks. Achilles felt ok, that’s progress.
  • Ran shirtless today for the first time since high school. Have been incredibly self-conscious about doing that (long sad story). It’s nice to not give a fuck about it anymore.
  • Had a blast at Steve’s post-marathon party. Played beer pong for the first time and got to hangout & catch up with lot’s of fun folks. Met a few cool new folks as well.
  • Enjoyed hanging out with Jess and Pete and doing a late dinner at Great Dane Hilldale.

Daily Positives – 5/29/2010

  • Had a fun, brief conversation with a woman at Fireman’s Park in Verona while getting my bike ready for a big ride. She’s doing her first IM this year and has done ultra-marathons in the past. Also dealing with achilles issues.
  • Solid long bike today. Got through some serious dehydration issues (self induced, I should know better) and was able to accomplish a 100-miler. Achilles felt good the whole time, no bonk issues. Longest ride of the season (time/miles). Slightly faster average than last week’s 91-miler. First ride on the compact crankset – liked it a lot.
  • Ran into Bobby Z on Midtown hill – he was coming down, me up. He turned around and rode back to Verona and the 2nd loop with me. Awesome to hang out.
  • Met Josh in Verona and he did the 2nd loop with Bobby & I. Great catching up with him, he’s looking great in his preparation for his first IM at WI.
  • Hung out with Rocket at RBS for a bit while I refueled between laps.
  • Had a great evening catching up with my second favorite Dean and Deb at BW3’s in Appleton.

Daily Positives – 5/28/2010

  • In an email exchange this morning Joan changed her signature line. Along with her AML Lead & Senior Analyst titles, she included: Dean’s Friend and Honorary Mom Always. That’s one of many reasons why she’s still my favorite “mother-in-law” even though she really isn’t anymore and I have always thought of her more as a “sister” (in a good way) than a mother-in-law.
  • Joan shared some pics and a synopsis of Big John’s event at the dive shop in Rockford
  • Took the afternoon off from work. Got some errands done and a new compact crankset installed on my bike
  • Wonderful evening of dinner, drinks, and conversation with Kathleen. Was fun to cruise around downtown in her convertible.
  • Ran into Andy and Vanessa at 608 Bistro, got to chat for a bit. Vanessa’s struggling through an achilles injury as well and will not be able to participate at IM CdA.

John Steele’s Diving Museum Event

Joan’s father (Michele’s grandfather), John Steele,  is a renowned Great Lakes Shipwreck diver. He and his diving partners have “discovered” and dove on scores of shipwrecks. John is an incredibly modest and sharp-witted man that has done a lot as a pioneer in the Great Lakes diving community. He was also on the cutting edge underwater videography. He and his partners took loads of pictures and film of the wrecks they discovered. This historical documentation has become more important with the passing of time because many wrecks have changed over the decades:  artifacts have been stripped (only somewhat recently illegal), the structures have deteriorated, and the invasive zebra mussel has been introduced into the Great Lakes. There has been a bit of a dilemma within the family as to what exactly to do with the over 34,000 feet of John’s raw diving film. It wouldn’t last forever and was prohibitively expensive to be digitized. Thankfully, through the network of the dive community and some coordination from Joan & Michele, the dilemma has been resolved.

Last night there was a gathering of about 25 people at Lockwood Pioneer Diving Museum in Love’s Park, IL to celebrate John’s contributions to Great Lakes research and ship wreck discovery as a diving pioneer. Amazingly, the museum secured a grant to digitize John’s video footage and will preserve it at the museum. It is hoped that the film is usable and will produce media for past, present and future divers, researchers, and historians to use as reference materials.

Others that attended the event included:  Dan Johnson (owner of the museum and a dive shop), Jack Ryan, Gayle Peterson, diving buddy Gene Turner, Paul Ehorn, Brendon Baillod, Harry Zych, Bill Steinbach and many others. Brendon presented John with a copy of his new book  “Wisconsin’s Lost Ships’ that he’d had signed by all the other veteran divers. Dan Johnson gave a very nice speech. John truly enjoyed the event was was glad to reunite with several diving buddies.

I’m so proud of John for all he has accomplished and am grateful that because the work of Joan, Michele, the Lockwood Pioneer Diving museum, and others, future generations will be able to share and learn from his work.
